I am a new teacher to Hawaii. I am a special education teacher and I work with students that require lots of movement in order to enhance their focus. The tools I am requesting are designed to provide safe and efficient movement opportunities for these students in the classroom.
My goal is to create a classroom space where students are able to improve their focus and attention through movement.
Exercise can improve learning. According to the article written by Harvard Health Publishing, exercise has both direct and indirect impact on memory. Regular exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus which is involved in memory (Godman, 2014). It also has the ability to reduce insulin, reduce inflammation and stimulate release of growth factors (Godman, 2014). Furthermore, exercise can indirectly influence learning by decreasing anxiety and improving mood and sleep. It is suggested that kids get 60 minutes of exercise each day. I want to help my students by providing movement and exercise opportunities in the classroom. Regular exercise can have a positive influence on student learning and therefore I want to create an environment where students can engage in movement in the classroom.
The other theme of my items is math. The specific items I have requested align with the math curriculum and will be used to support my students with their math. I will be able to support their math growth by using the calendar, numbers and clock in my classroom.
