My Students

"Doing whatever it takes to ensure success for every child." That is our motto! We are a Title I school where our students come from diverse backgrounds. Our 900 + population receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have experienced significant trauma in their lives and school is a safe space for many of them.

Our middle schoolers defy the odds with their bravery.

We hope to create a loving, caring, respectable learning environment by being sensitive to both their academic needs as well as their social and emotional needs.

My Project

What better way to help my middle school students see the importance of numbers in their daily lives than through literature. In fact, children's literature is the ideal vehicle to open the door to mathematics to build context and background knowledge.

"Reading books that weave mathematical ideas into engaging stories helps dispel the myth that math is dry, unimaginative, and inaccessible," Marilyn Burns.

Making sure math is not just "naked numbers" is imperative to understand real life implications. Children's books can not only generate interest in math but also provide contexts that help bring meaning to abstract concepts.

Faith Wallace, co-author of Teaching Math Through Reading states, “When math is integral to the story students can learn the concepts in a natural way, become inquisitive, engage in thoughtful conversation, and more." Making math real is the ultimate goal!
