Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have a very diverse demographic in our community, ranging from refugees to families that have been in the neighborhood for generations. We also have a majority of English Language Learners who have just come to America! In our Head Start Pre-K program alone we have quite a few languages going on at once; including, Spanish, Chinese, Karen and Arabic. Some children come into my classroom having only arrived to America a few days before and do not speak or understand English. How very scary for these brave children! But what a joy seeing them understand some English and then speaking before the school year is complete. I am always amazed by them.
Since we are a Head Start program, our families are within the poverty level and depend on our program for many resources.
Sometimes extra clothes, especially warm winter clothing, books and basic school supplies. I like to add materials to the classroom that will enhance their learning experience. Unfortunately out budget doesn't always meet the needs.
My Project
We need some new materials to make math and literacy more exciting! We have been doing graphic practice in the classroom and a organizer for the lapboards and a supple of dry erasers can really help!
Our little hands need to strengthen up to help us write!
The write a letter activity center can help them strengthen their fine motor skills without having to worry that they "didn't do it right". For letter recognition, magnets and build a letter activity center will help them get to know the letters by feeling and constructing.
Geo boards are always a fun way to explore shapes! We will be studying signs and their shapes in the coming weeks, the geo boards will be a great asset! Also, a fresh supply of number magnets will help with numeral identification.
