Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important. ~ Bill Gates However, it is an incredibly valuable tool! Ms. D's Math, Social Studies, and Spanish Language Arts class is a hands-on zone that welcomes technology!

My first grade students this year are a diverse group in terms of literacy levels.

My thirty-nine students' needs range from ESOL I through students requiring support in the area of social, emotional, and behavioral support. Technology centers would be a wonderful incentive allowing students to learn and grow at their various learning levels while motivating them to succeed. There are approximately 450 students at our community school of which approximately half are in the free and reduced lunch program. We are a tight knit community with a fair amount of parental involvement. The PTA supports teachers through student incentives, learning materials, and teacher support. We have a strong character education program to include various presentations for students throughout the year. Further to this, our school's STEAM Fair/Reading Under the Stars event is outstanding for the Elementary level to include language literacy, science projects and hands-on centers, green schools events, & more!

My Project

With the iPads, I will create a learning center for students that will allow them to explore mathematics concepts through the iReady program. In addition, they will use the iPads to create literacy books across genres that we will make available to other students on the Media Center desktops. The toner cartridges will be utilized to create bound, hard copies of these books and to give each child a copy of their creation for use in the STEAM/Reading event and take home as a reward for their efforts. I will seek PTA support to obtain protective covers for the iPads for safe handling by students. In addition, I will request that the PTA provide paper and binding materials for the book projects. With parent approval, I may request the PTA e-publish the books online for free access over the Internet for others to access and enjoy. I know that students will look forward to completing their creations and will be motivated to improve their basic skills through this project. Please fund us!

My students are beautiful, eager learners.

Many struggle with leaving families and their home lands behind to encounter our strange country with new traditions, customs, and languages. Others face personal struggles that can hinder learning and cause struggles that make learning daily a challenge. Students will be able to access new technologies to support their journeys and aid in these difficult transitions. They will have a sense of pride in their beautiful creations to cherish for a lifetime.
