My students need materials to support fine and gross motor development, including pencil grips, a handwriting slant board, a balance beam, and a tunnel.
In my classroom we work to develop the whole child, this includes not only cognitive skills, but also motor skills. We partner closely with therapists to deliver individualized services to each student, but lack certain materials needed for optimal carryover from therapy room to classroom.
I teach a 4-year-old preschool class for students with developmental delays in a Title 1 school.
My students are excited and energetic about school. Like all young children, they learn through play and by doing. Upon entering my class, the varying ability levels are apparent; each child brings his or her own uniqueness to our school family.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of materials that will support fine and gross motor development, including pencil grips, a handwriting slant board, a balance beam, and a tunnel.
With the requested materials, my students will be able to acquire and practice new motor skills. With the variety of pencil grips, my students will be able to develop an appropriate tripod grasp for handwriting that will be important for success for in Kindergarten. The gross motor materials will be used to develop the students' vestibular systems, which encompasses balance, body awareness, and motor planning.
When my students are learning a new skill, they must practice, practice, practice!
Having the same materials in my classroom as there are in the therapy room will allow my students greater opportunities to learn and practice vital motor skills.
