Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.
My Project
Donors have been absolutely wonderful, especially since we started emergency and distance learning. I have received grants for books, journals and math materials to support my students at home. And now, I am getting new students! Yes, kids are moving into the neighborhood and I am purchasing materials, searching for similar items and scrounging to find matching materials so that they can participate equally with our online classes.
My new students need matching writing and math materials to actively participate with us in online learning.
This grant will help to get those materials for my new students.
As we move into the third trimester, all of my kids will be writing and learning addition and subtraction. Having the same materials as the teacher and classmates will help my new students gain traction with their learning.
