Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Anyone who has raised or taught a middle schooler knows how difficult it can be to motivate them. I have taught 7th and 8th grade for 10 years, and have finally developed a positive rewards-based system that reinforces good behavior and encourages students to invest in their learning.
My co-teacher and I developed a raffle system where students receive raffle tickets for positive behavior which includes, acts of kindness, being on task, participating in class, and for academic achievement.
Students write their names on their tickets and place them in their homeroom bins. At the end of the week, we draw one name from each bin and those selected students are our winners for the week. Students receive their choice of a homework pass or a prize. Due to our implementation of the system, students are more focused in class, they are encouraged to share their ideas, and they are invested in their learning. We also have reported far less negative behavior because students are eager to earn tickets. The only issue is that it can be costly, especially when you see 6 homerooms a day! I want to be able to continue this system with my students because I have seen the wonders it has done for them. Students often express how excited they are for the raffle each week. However, this system is a financial strain. That is why we are asking for a collection of items that can be used for our prize bin through the end of this year, as well as next year.
We are requesting the following prizes: sneaker keychains, Hello Kitty key chains, mood rings, fun animal erasers, enamel pins, and Croc charms.
