My Students
My students do not have access to books at home or at school. I teach in Oakland and am determined to provide my students a classroom library and books that are compelling and teach my students good reading strategies. We are starting a library project and we need grade level books.
I am a resource specialist and support students from k - 5.
My students who are in SPED are not being set up for success and are losing themselves in the gap within the achievement gap. They want to read. They just don't have access to interesting good books. They are curious and hungry for books and materials that will set them up for success. By beginning a classroom library we will start to check out books in class and progress towards monthly library field trips where my students will develop a love for reading.
My Project
Read Alouds. Reading circles. Independent reading time. These are things that simply cannot happen in my SPED class because my school lacks the materials. Every material I have requested will be put into use into our classroom to set my students up for success in life and in the classroom. I remember what it felt like to find a book of interest which led me down a path of a love of reading. For many of my students, they need to find content that engages them. The books I have requested were chosen based on student surveys and topics my students find interesting. In order for my student to develop better reading skills they need to first be drawn into books. Once they begin liking to read and are eager to visit libraries we will begin reading books that will be used for end of the year testing. The most important thing my students are going to learn with these new resources is a new founded love for reading - an indispenable quality for their future successes in life!
I am a first year teacher and got to my school and was surprised by the paucity of supplies.
I cannot be the best teacher I can with such outdated materials and books. My students deserve better. Please help me build my classroom library and begin to sow the seed of love of reading for my students. Many have no books at home. With an adequate classroom library there will be no excuses for not having time to read or not having any books to read.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
