I need to replace several old and broken keyboards with new ones. I teach two keyboard classes and sometimes do not have enough working keyboards for each student. My immediate need is for three new keyboards, 8 stands, 8 benches, and 10 copies of "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano All-in-One Course" (level 1).
My 7th and 8th grade piano students are all beginners. They learn keyboard geography, rhythm, and reading music. They also learn how to play ensemble selections. They learn songs by playing round robin style, with each one given a measure of a song to play until the entire selection is played. Learning to read music and play an instrument has been proven to improve standardized test scores. Presently, some of my students are using keyboards with no sound because they are broken. They also have to share materials, so they are unable to take anything home. By having keyboards and books donated, students would have materials directly in their hands to enhance their music education.
With these materials, I can continue the unit we are studying without students needing to take turns at the working keyboards and having to share books. They will benefit by having more hands-on time to practice and achieve success.
My students have enjoyed learning about music, and would greatly benefit from new working equipment. We missed five weeks of school due to Hurricane Katrina, and many of these students were still without power at that time. We also have students who have relocated from New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish who lost their homes. I have 4 students in this category.
Any help with any of these materials would be greatly appreciated and used directly by the students.
