Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our math classroom is a place for all of students to grow regardless of their ability, the number of years spent in the US, or their home language. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch and breakfast. We serve ICT classrooms with a mix of students with and without IEP's many of whom are English Language learners, having recently arrived. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Bengali, Mandingu, and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics, their needs, and their goals.
Our students want to be future doctors, engineers, fashion designers and philanthropists.
As their teachers we hope to provide them with the opportunities, skills, and education to achieve these dreams.
My Project
These paper and pencils are essential for daily use in our math classroom. The students are encouraged to show their work and get comfortable making mistakes, erasing, and trying again. With the transition to Common Core mathematics, students have been given larger, real-world problems that require them to try different methods and revise their work.
For this reason we want our students to work in pencil - proof that mistakes are expected and a sign of learning.
When we can provide our students with the materials to succeed, class time does not need to be spent on getting ready. During this crucial year, the focus can be on learning mathematics.
Giving low-income students access to materials is an investment in their future. These pencils and paper will allow students to tackle larger and more complex math problems with confidence.
