I teach in a middle school located in a diverse, urban neighborhood. The building was built in the early 1900's, and the striking architecture and woodwork make the school a beautiful place to work. I am lucky to work with colleagues and students who enjoy coming to school each day.
My Spanish classroom is a place where the majority of my students are learning to creatively express themselves in their second language.
Others are developing academic language and furthering their skills in their first language. My students are scholars who have a passion for learning and creating. They are constantly striving to communicate more fluently and understand what it takes to build this ability.
My Project
Each year, my students create their own "books" with a folder for a book jacket and plastic sheet protectors to safeguard the pages. For this activity, they use a variety of stories in Spanish. Many of the stories are ones that we have previously created as a class. To make their books, students use construction paper, markers, glue, and other supplies.
While making the books is an important part of the process, the best part is that these books then become part of my classroom library for years to come!
Students love to read the books made by their friends, siblings, and students from other grade levels. The reason these books are ideal for my library is because they are level-appropriate and compelling!
