This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher at a high-need school in which nearly 100% of the students are on free lunch. My school is a bilingual school with a Spanish Immersion program. My students learn all 5th grade content in Spanish and English. They are required to be literate in two languages, write in two languages, and build vocabulary in two languages.
My school lacks the funds to provide its teachers with the needed supplies in our classrooms. We run out of paper on a weekly basis so they encourage us to use overhead projectors to cut down on copying. However, we don't have the funds to buy transparencies. The students barely have adequate textbooks supplies. In fact, we don't have math textbooks. My classroom is in desperate need of supplies that will help my students learn.
The transparencies films will allow me to reduce the amount of copying yet still be able to do the activities I have planned with my students. An overhead timer will be extremely useful to be more efficient in the classroom. It will allow students to be mindful of the amount of time allotted for activities. Students will learn to manage their time during tests and activities. The timers will be beneficial to increase my students' fluency in reading. They will also be used for students to time each other while learning their math facts. Students are always more willing to participate in activities when there is some competition involved. Finally, the other overhead activities will allow whole class instruction to be more fluent and engaging. My students need a lot of practice in reading maps and with math. My students will be able to practice in their groups during whole class instruction as I walk them through the activities and lesson with the overhead activities and supplies.
Please help bring equality to my bilingual classroom. My students deserve a fair chance to education and an equal opportunity to access supplies needed for their education.
