My Students

At the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women (UASBYW), our girls come from everywhere. From Mali to the Dominican Republic and everywhere in between, they cross oceans and continents to find themselves in our classrooms in New York City. They are bright, diverse, fierce, proud and they are hungry for opportunity.

As an unscreened, Title One school, many of our students come to us far below grade level in math and reading.

They struggle with learning and behavioral disabilities, traveling from communities that commonly experience violence or crime or from single parent households that are almost always run by devoted mothers who want nothing but the best for their daughters.

Many of our girls are eager to experience success. It's up to our school's team of educators, counselors, administrators and other school staff to provide the tools, materials and other supports necessary for each young woman to reach her full potential,

My Project

Adequate supplies are necessary for students to learn effectively and be successful. My special needs students often struggle with organizing and test taking strategies.

By providing students with the appropriate tools and materials, they'll have not just the supplies, but the confidence needed to be successful.

Sticky notes, tabs and highlighters will be made available to students in our supplies center so that they can independently organize their notebooks as well as the notes they have written. Timers will be placed in each content class that special needs students visit so that they are aware of time limits and can be alerted both visually and aurally. Time will be built into each class period for students to record current and upcoming assignments. Pens, pencils and markers will be made available to students so that they can track and manage these, and even use color coding to categorize major tests as opposed to smaller quizzes. Index cards will be used to prepare for tests and quizzes and test taking strategies will be taught to suit each student. These will also be used to have students develop a word wall with key vocabulary they will need to be familiar with, throughout the year.

By making materials readily available for students, and encouraging them to access these independently during class time, students will build a stronger sense of organization and independence. These materials are essential for making our students with special needs feel successful and confident about their learning. I have seen how organization and sufficient supplies can effect student success, and I'm eager to watch my students grow as a result of having what they need to learn!
