This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Using chips, chocolates, and gummies as materials for teaching STEM subjects can offer a unique and engaging way to grasp complex concepts. For instance, in a physics class, students can explore buoyancy by designing and testing boats made from chocolate bars, and observing how different shapes and sizes affect their ability to float. This hands-on experiment not only demonstrates principles of density and displacement but also encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students iterate on their designs to optimize performance.
In a mathematics lesson, chips can be utilized for practical applications of geometry and algebra.
Students can use different-shaped chips to model geometric concepts such as area and perimeter, or they can engage in probability exercises by calculating the likelihood of selecting certain chip flavors from a bag. By incorporating familiar snacks into the learning process, educators can make abstract mathematical concepts more tangible and relatable, fostering deeper understanding and retention among students. Additionally, in a chemistry class, gummies can serve as interactive tools for exploring molecular structures and chemical reactions. Students can assemble gummy molecule models to visualize compounds, and they can even conduct experiments to observe how gummies react to various substances, demonstrating concepts like solubility and pH levels in a fun and memorable way.
