This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Please help me to provide my early childhood students, who are considered at-risk—including those from foster care, special education, and emergent bilingual backgrounds—with essential materials to support their early handwriting and literacy development using the "Mat Man" character from the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. This project helps young learners master the shapes of letters, correct letter formation, and even learn how to draw a person, all through interactive, hands-on resources that make learning both engaging and effective.

The materials selected are carefully crafted to help students build fine motor skills, shape recognition, and foundational writing abilities.

The project not only focuses on letter formation but also teaches children how to draw Mat Man—a simple figure made up of basic shapes, which helps students develop spatial awareness and the ability to represent the human form in a creative way. This process reinforces the connection between shapes and letters, making it easier for students to understand and remember proper letter formation.

Given the diverse needs of students, including those with special education needs and those from foster care or emergent bilingual backgrounds, the project provides a supportive, inclusive environment for all learners. I aim to bridge educational gaps and build a strong foundation for early literacy and motor skills development. It ensures that all children, regardless of background, gain confidence in their learning and are set up for success. The materials and activities are adaptable to offer the best learning experience possible for every child.
