As the Fifth grade Math teacher at KIPP:Gaston College Preparatory, I have seen students miss too many exam questions because they did not think logically. We do a great job of teaching our students direct skills, but the ability to think in the abstract is often lost on them. Because of this, when a question is not worded precisely how I would word it, the kids often get it wrong.
I have found a game that combats this problem well. The game is called "Mastermind," and it requires students to think about creative ways to solve a problem. I believe that a class set of this game would tremendously increase our children's ability to come up with creative solutions to word problems. It is a two-person game, so 15 would be a perfect class set. A class set of this game would be used regularly by our entire student body. Our students need creative minds to solve problems both inside the school building and out, this game inspires that creativity. Any donations or purchases would be greatly appreciated.
