Mastering Money: Financial Resposibility From the Start
Help me give my students items to develop their understanding of the importance of money and budgeting - Osmo Pizza Co., Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Jr. and matching book set, and items to jump start our classroom store.
I teach an enthusiastic group of second graders with a wide range of talents and abilities, likes and interests. I have 23 students in my homeroom class, but I also get to teach math to the other class of second graders, giving me the wonderful opportunity to interact with all of the second graders in our school.
As a class, we work to form bonds and become a true community of learners.
We establish our rules and expectations and work towards forming good habits. My students are curious. They are explorers. My students love hands-on, project and activity based learning. They enjoy learning and some really light up when they realize they've understood a new concept.
My Project
These materials will help my students master money and the develop an early understanding of the importance of earning, saving, and spending. Using Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Jr. and book set, I will teach my students the importance of budgeting their money while also introducing the lesson of needs versus wants. We will then put this into practice as they earn money for their positive behavior in the classroom and through their classroom jobs. They will then save, budget, and spend their earnings in the classroom school store to buy basic school supplies as well as more enticing fun items and rewards. They will further practice their money skills as they take turns running the school store and operating the cash register.
Helping the students learn these important financial lessons early on will set them up for a lifetime of success.
The Osmo Pizza Co. game will enhance my students' understanding of finance. They will be thrilled to practice their money skills as they become little entrepreneurs in this real-time interactive game that lets them practice counting money, making change, and budgeting to make upgrades to their pizza shop.
Exposing my students to these powerful money concepts will help me teach the state standards in a meaningful way that will leave a lasting impact on my students.
