My students need hands-on manipulatives and activities, such as a math games library, place value cubes, geometric shapes, Power Pen quiz cards and pens, write and wipe markers, and more!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers." -Shakuntala Devi.
I always loved math growing up, and now I love teaching math. I love showing students that math can be fun, especially in the primary grades!
My students attend an inner-city school, and many have difficult home lives.
They may be living with only one parent or no biological parents at all. A high percentage of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch plans. Additionally, the students I teach have been identified with disabilities that may include Learning Disabilities, Cognitive Disabilities, Autism, behavioral challenges, Speech and Language Impairments, or a combination. Some of the issues my students face on a daily basis involve home and family life and emotional issues that cannot necessarily be addressed at school.
My Project
After teaching primarily 4th-5th grade special education for the last five years, I will be switching to K-4th special education this coming school year. My early learners will need plenty of hands-on materials to solidify their number sense skills so they can move through elementary mathematics with the highest confidence. With materials such as Place Value Cubes, Write & Wipe Number Lines, and Mastering Math Games Library, my students will have hands-on practice with math concepts and learn how math relates to their everyday lives. Learning is best when it's fun and students barely realize they're learning at all! My students will be able to engage in an exciting learning environment and be excited to visit the resource room with the help of these activities and games.
Donations to this project will help to bring life and excitement into learning the sequencing of numbers, place value, time, money, fractions, addition, subtraction, geometry, and problem solving!
It is my hope that students will see the importance of mathematics early on and I will be able to create lifelong learners!
