My Students

I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.

I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for 10 years and for the past 10 years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.

They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies or food, needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a student's self esteem.

My Project

Part of the instructional framework at my school is that students are expected to work in small groups in all subjects. When my students would work in their math groups, they often wanted to show their work to the students in their groups. When they felt the need to show their work, I allowed them to write on the desks with dry erase markers. As a result, the desks would get stained because we weren't able to remove all of the markings.

These tablets would allow students to work in math groups and show their work effectively.

The tablets would allow my students to work together to solve rigorous math problems. They also will allow them to critique their work to help them figure where they may have gone wrong in their calculations.
