it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The pandemic's effects on education were profound and multifaceted. Many students struggled to adapt to remote learning due to a lack of reliable internet access, suitable devices, quiet study spaces, and lack of materials required to fully and deeply understand the content. The absence of face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers led to feelings of isolation, hindering social development and emotional well-being. The academic achievements of countless students suffered due to the challenges of staying engaged in a virtual environment. In our community, students faced unique challenges due to socio-economic disparities. Those from low-income families often lacked the necessary technology and hands-on materials to participate fully in remote learning. The absence of in-person support, as well as resources and guidance from teachers left many students feeling adrift and unable to grasp complex concepts. This project aims to bridge the educational gap made worse by the pandemic.
By providing manipulatives such as place value disks, and fraction towers, students will be able to engage in a hands on approach to learning.
Instead of looking at numbers on a page, they will be able to hold them, and build them, and explore. In turn, this will allow students to gain a deeper sense of numbers and computation. The intention with this project is to create a more equitable learning environment.
Additionally, to address the emotional toll of the pandemic, the project will provide resources such as a calm corner, and wobble stools for students who need it. These resources will help students cope with feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety, enabling them to focus on school while staying positive.
