My Students
I teach a very large student body at my school (1000+ students). I gratefully serve daily as their enthusiastic music specialist. My students are comprised of a diverse and eclectic mix of cultures and socioeconomic classes spanning all ages and all stages of academic achievement. They stand as a beautiful celebration of the human spirit and diversity! Through music, my students creatively explore ways to communicate who they are, where they have come from, and share points of light from the journey they are taking. Henry Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." In my classes that is certainly the case!
Music provides me with a wonderful opportunity to help my students develop a healthy sense of self and community through creatively integrated experiences that enhance their ability to learn and grow.
It gives them what they believe is a fun "break" from learning when in fact, they are learning and growing continually as they perform, play, and create in my classroom!
My Project
Rhythm instruments are going to be key in helping my music students conquer "covid spread". Unfortunately, this year, singing will have to take a back seat while we battle the pandemic, but music certainly won't! There are plenty of musical activities that build not only a musician's musicality and technique, but also academic pathways. It has been well documented that beat and rhythm are key music elements that transition seamlessly to language arts and mathematics.
The materials I've requested will allow my students the opportunity to create their own rhythm sticks and teach them a great deal about the science of sound and the beauty of beat and rhythm through hands on exploration.
We will cut the wooden dowels into 12 inch lengths and creatively wrap them in various colors of duct tape to make them not only colorful, but perfect for drumming on buckets without damaging them. The best part is that I will have enough materials donated through your generosity to avoid sharing. I have also asked for additional items that will help my students achieve greater success in musical exploration. These include books to inspire music and movement, pipe cleaners that can be bent into singable musical lines, and scarves for dancing. I can't wait to use all of these wonderful supplies to make my classroom a haven for musical "re-creation"!
