This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach six sections of physics and have 190 students. My school is located in an urban area and has 2800 students in it. Our school is the oldest one in the city.
My students are a diverse mix of low and high income urban students.
They represent many ethnic and racial groups. I also teach a wide array of classes.
I teach general physics, honors physics, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Physics. The students all love applied science and hands-on activities.
My Project
My students currently have no basic lab supplies. Students of science learn best when they can engage in the process of science. The lab supplies listed for this grant will allow students to measure length, time, and mass.
Students will be able to measure vertical and horizontal motion with the measuring tapes and timers.
My students will be able to calculate speed and estimate acceleration. Students will use the bathroom scales to measure forces involved in vertical acceleration (e.g. elevator). Students can use the masses with springs to measure forces (e.g. Hooke's Law). Students can use the bubble levels with boards to make inclined planes (and will use the stopwatches and measuring tapes to find acceleration on inclined planes).
