it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At Dungeons & Dragons Club, students play the popular table top role playing game. The game requires students to have collaborate on telling a story driven by student imagination and creativity. The resources I'm asking for here--dice, resource books, playing mats, etc.--will empower students to build relationships with each other based on creativity, social interaction, and cooperative fun. Many of the materials, including the playing mats, minifigurines, area affect templates, and condition rings will help students have something visual to help them imagine the story and to prompt their creativity. The resource books will help provide the tools to build the story and create characters they are interested and invested in. The books, and the spell cards, will allow students access to non-digital reference materials to keep them present and plugged in to the game, and the people, around them.
The students in D&D Club are empowered to lead the adventuring themselves.
As advisor, I input as little as I can. Having students facilitate, create, and play their own games lets them develop their own interpersonal skills and relationships. Many students, even those who come off originally as shy, come to club and make friends through the game. They use club as a fun, social anchor to their week and their lives at school. Students all have the opportunities to "DM," or facilitate, their own games, thereby developing further leadership skills. D&D Club is an important part of caring for students' mental health, as it gives them an opportunity to build relationships, be creative, and have phone-less fun every week.
