Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the kindest, hardest working, and most persistent people I know in the face of adversity. That persistence was put to the test this spring. New York was an epicenter of the disease, and most of my students live in the zip codes in Queens that had the highest infection rates and mortality: Corona, Jackson Heights, and Jamaica. Many lost family and suffered through this virus themselves. Through the difficulty, they continued to learn with me online although our school was shuttered.

Piling on to the uncertain times we've just lived through, the upcoming school year may be fully online, or partially in-person: no one knows what is coming next.

I am optimistic students and I can return to some normalcy in September no matter the setting. What is different is that if in school, we need to wear masks to stop the spread of the virus. My students understand the need to stop the spread of COVID because they have seen firsthand what it does. I want to give them the tools to do so while still giving them a chance to express themselves.

My Project

I am asking for reusable cloth masks my students can have when they come to the first day of school. They need to know that just like pens, pencils, and paper, the tools they need for success should be made available to them. By giving them a mask they can use and wash for reuse everyday, I will be able to ensure everyone has this essential tool for protecting themselves and others.

So my students have a sense of pride and attachment to their masks, the tie-dye kits will allow them to personalize them.

It will be a way for us to learn about one another individually, but also bond as a community over our collective efforts to protect one another. Students will be more likely to wear their masks each day since they will have designed them.

If we must return to school during this pandemic, please help us protect one another in style. With budgets being cut next year, we need your help now more than ever. Thank you for your support!
