This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids, eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students are excited to come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, especially during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.
My Project
The full kindergarten day is long for 5 and 6 year olds. Wearing masks all day can be hard. When making letter sounds, students need their masks to be off of their faces just a little bit so that they can form the sounds correctly. I hope to provide my students with masks that will not hinder their learning of the sounds. In addition, sometimes the masks fall on the floor. I give them new masks when that happens. I don't want to run out of masks.
Providing my students with face masks and snacks will help them to stay healthy and engaged as they work throughout the kindergarten day.
Having a fun and healthy snack option will give my students something to look forward to in the afternoon. We have a full-day kindergarten and by 1:30, the kids are hungry. These pretzels and Goldfish crackers, along with the fruit cups, will provide my students with some quick nourishment to help them make it through the long afternoon of school. Many of my students attend the after school program and they stay until 6:00 pm. I hope to provide them with a little "pick-me-up" with a fun snack in the afternoon. I also send home food with the kids when we have leftover food. I hope to have this food available for them, as needed.
