Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am very fortunate to teach both Drama and Special Education in an Astoria, New York public middle school. I am constantly looking for ways to incorporate dramatic arts into the special education classroom because I strongly feel that participating in theatre will help my students succeed in school, boost their self esteem, strengthen their social skills, and provide an outlet to express themselves creatively.
I have been working on a unit exploring puppetry and mask making, and I feel this would be an excellent addition to my special education program. Puppets and masks provide a safe outlet for students to express their emotions and thoughts without fear of intimidation. Wearing masks and acting with puppets help students create new characters as well as bring characters from a book or play to life. These tools can help strengthen their skills in literature and social studies as well.
Because the drama program at my school is still very new, we are extremely short on supplies. We have very little in the way of pens and paper, much less any crafts to help build costumes or props. I am asking for different types of arts and crafts materials that can help us build appropriate masks and puppets. With a little imagination and the proper materials, I know my students can accomplish great things. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
