My Students

Our fifth graders enter our school reading at wildly different levels... some just beginning to sound out words, some learning how to picture a story in their minds, and some ready for a challenge. Each and every child deserves the chance to grow.

Becoming eager, confident readers is the most important work our students do.

They read during class, in line, at the bus stop, after lunch, for a treat, for a break, and for homework every night... and they learn to READ BABY READ. All of our students read a fifth-grade text together during reading class, and all of our students also read books they choose themselves. But for some of our kids -- those who come in way below grade level, and those who come in above grade level, ready for a challenge -- that's not enough. They need individualized instruction in order to grow and flourish.

My Project

So much of what we do is frustrating to our most struggling readers because they are still far from being able to understand it. They need to read a book that challenges them but also rewards their efforts and encourages them to stretch and grow. For them, we are asking for 13 copies of Marvin Redpost #1, a second-grade-level book. Our strongest readers, on the other hand, are desperate for a challenge. Many of them get good grades but have never lost themselves in a book that pushed them to think new thoughts, learn new words, and imagine new places. They need to read a book that invites them to a deeper and richer reading life. For them, we are asking for 21 copies of Harry Potter #1, a sixth-grade-level book.

Reading teachers know that we can write brilliant plans and deliver fascinating lessons and none of it will matter as much as what happens in the space between a child and a book.

Help us make sure that each child has access to the book he or she needs to read next in order to grow.
