Was going to the school's library one of your favorite memories from elementary school? Maybe you enjoyed being the first student to check-out the newest book in a favorite series, and then finding a little nook, where you could read uninterrupted?
I often refer to my school as the "Little Engine That Could." We have numerous at-risk students (as we are a Title 1 school), but that doesen't stop them from success!
I am the small but mighty Librarian (Media teacher) at my K-4 school. I see 30 classes and 400+ students a week. I take pride in helping them develop an intrinsic love for reading, fostering their interests and helping them choose their own material. My students come each day with so many hardships and obstacles that it is my job to create a safe and nurturing environment so that they can help deal with and/or overcome these issues. As a result, the Media Center has become the hub of the school, where students look forward to coming each week!
My Project
My newest goal is to create a Makerspace in the Media Center, and fill it with numerous STEM-related activities.
This hands-on approach to STEM concepts allows students to see things in 3D, and gain valuable insight on the basics of engineering.
Through this, questions and suggestions would be encouraged, as everyone gets to try out their ideas. Strawbees connectors provide an easy, quick and inexpensive way for instant prototyping which enables students to try out new ideas again and again. Using our hands is key to developing our nervous system and problem solving skills. What we learn from tinkering, putting things together, taking them apart - investigating real life 3D structures - is helpful to us in almost all aspects of life.
