This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach elementary instrumental music in five schools in a very large urban school district. Many of my students come from low income families who qualify for free lunch, and a large number of my students are second language learners. My students range in age from third grade through fifth grade, and in one school i teach sixth graders as well.

Without the free instrument loan program provided by my district, most of these students would never be able to afford to rent an instrument, let alone pay for lessons.

It is such a great feeling to see their happy faces when they find out they have been chosen to participate in music class.

My Project

Instrumental music books are an invaluable tool to teach my students how to play their instrument and how to read music. These books also expose my students to songs from many different cultures and countries. My students will be able to take the books home to practice and since they include a practice CD, it makes practicing at home more fun.

And with budgets being what they are, music and the other arts are usually low priority when it comes to funding.

This project will provide quality music books for my students, give them the chance to become proficient music readers and help me to instill the love of music in them.
