This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a neighborhood school that is mostly Hispanic. It is a supportive and tight knit community. These children are eager to come to school each day to learn and grow as students. The majority of the students are English Language Learners. Most students are still learning English. They need to have hands on materials, engaging lessons, and lots of choices to help keep them motivated to learn throughout the day. These are very busy first graders who like wiggle while they learn.
I am trying to provide these ELL students with a variety of activities, math games, and manipulatives in order to meet all of the learning styles of the students in my classroom.
My Project
Through the year these first graders have learned a ton! We have learned how to add, subtract, count, recognize place value, shapes and tell time. The Math Folder Games will be an excellent resource for students to practice their math skills. The counting and place value games allow students to continue to practice comparing numbers, counting forward and backward, and find greater than, less than and equal to. Students will also have an opportunity to play operations games. This will help them become fluent with their addition and subtraction facts, and will help prepare them for second grade!
Playing board games makes learning so fun, you don't even know you are doing it.
The Pop To Win board games will allow students to continue working on their problem solving skills. This game include word problems, comparing numbers, interpreting data, and recognizing shapes. My students will work on problem solving skills while interacting with others!
The Mastering Basic Math skills is a good resource for some of my students who need extra practice with skills they are struggling with. We can use these activities in small group to help students feel confident and ready to move onto second grade!
