My students need a variety of math games and manipulatives, including 12 sets of counters, 9 sets of hands-on math trays and magnetic numbers, to engage them during interactive station time.
Kindergarteners want to be mathematicians! Our five-year-old students love to touch and explore the world around them. They also love to show off how high they can count or what the answer to 2+2 is. What better way to engage them in math lessons than to provide hands-on activities?
I teach in a small neighborhood school that is struggling to keep up with the times.
We have been affected by funding cuts and have to scrimp and save to buy basic school supplies like paper and glue. Our parents help as much as they can but many of them are struggling as well. We simply do not have the money or resources available to purchase any kind of materials that are deemed "extra."
The math supplies that I have asked for certainly fall under that "extra" category! My students absolutely LOVE to play games. The thing they don't know is that while they are "playing" they are also learning valuable math skills and concepts.
My Project
Kindergarteners are naturally curious and energetic. Channeling that energy and creating a positive learning environment is every teacher's challenge! I strive to make math lessons fun and imaginative. Bringing out puppets and talking in funny voices is an everyday occurrence in my classroom! The trick to teaching five-year-old students is to make everything into a game. When I give my students dinosaur or sea creature counters, the kids think they get to play with new "toys" when actually they are going to be using these counters to explore and learn new math skills.
My students need a variety of math games and manipulatives, including animal counters, hands-on math trays, and magnetic numbers, to engage them during interactive station time. The hands-on math trays are another tool that the students will use to sort, graph and count a variety of manipulatives. Children need to be actively engaged in order to fully learn math concepts and using the pop addition games will certainly fulfill that requirement! Teaching Kindergarten is very rewarding and challenging at the same time. Receiving these exciting supplies will be fabulous!
Donating to my project will ensure that many Kindergarteners will be exposed to good teaching practices.
Teaching math to five-year-olds can be difficult at times. The students need hands-on activities that they can physically interact with in order for them to fully understand the math concept being taught. By donating these games, counters and math trays, you are ensuring that my students will be exposed to the wonders of math in a fun and exciting way!
