We are kindergarten classrooms of diverse and curious learners. Our students come from varied backgrounds; for many, this is their first school experience. We are a lab school for the local university and are hosts to many student teachers who bring fun, learning, and innovation to our classrooms.
Many of our students' first language is not English, and many come to us from disadvantaged backgrounds without many learning experiences to draw upon, but the one thing they all have is the desire to learn.
My Project
This year school-wide we are implementing math workshop. Since kindergarten is where beginning math concepts are first introduced, we want to provide our students with new materials that will increase independent student engagement during math centers.
Kindergarten is where the foundations of number sense are created, the foundation that will carry students through the grades.
By making math fun at this early grade level students will increase their desire to engage in math as concepts become more complex. These materials will also increase cooperative learning and math talk during our math workshop block so teachers are able to target instruction to the needs of our students.
