My Students

Arithmetic is where numbers fly like pigeons in and out of your head. ~Carl Sandburg, "Arithmetic"; I'd rather my students soared above the confusion many students start with in learning basic math.

This class will be filled with 24 pairs of bright eyes and eager hands ready to explore all I have to share with them.

They attend a school that is serious about academics but has a deep focus in music and the arts. Many of our students are from the inner city, but at our school there is no achievement gap because we believe in each of our young scholars from the moment they step into my classroom till the day they graduate from the 8th grade.

My Project

My students need hands-on manipulatives to explore making math real to them as the begin their year in kindergarten. Each of the items I have requested are bright and engaging and *very* purposeful. The manipulatives and games included make learning math a joy, a game in itself...but also make math accessible by giving them so many hands-on activities in which to engage.

In kindergarten, I lay the foundation for my students' remaining years.

They need to know now that learning is fun. So many people grow up being afraid of math. Here is a chance to get hold of the imagination of young minds and teach them now that math is delightful and a wonderful accompaniment to their music and overall education.
