My students need hands-on math experiences including a math Circle Time center, bean bag shapes, and play-doh number cards.

Dr. Seuss said, "A person's a person, no matter how small." I have such wonderful little learners in my classroom who are full of energy and surprise me everyday with their eagerness to learn. They need experiences that are hands-on to help close the achievement gap in mathematics.
My students attend a high risk inner-city school in a city with one of the highest levels of poverty in the country.
Everyone receives a free lunch, and most of my children live in poverty. They need a chance to succeed. They need a chance to prove they've got what it takes to pass the test, and they need someone to believe in them. They come to school with eager minds and open arms, and I want to provide them with any chance I can to help them love school and to change their path in life.
Circle time is the most active and meaningful time of our day. We meet as a class and look at concepts together. The Circle Time center will allow us to explore concepts like numbers, place value, coins, and patterning as a group. The Calendar Activity Program will allow us to explore units of time, days of the week, months of the year, and many more ideas as a group. At centers, children can use the number cards to mold play doh and wikki sticks to use their gross motor skills while learning to form numbers. The bean bag shapes will let children hold a specific shape and explore its different attributes. Together, we can achieve each child's personal best with these awesome materials.
I believe in my children.
I believe we can break the cycle of poverty and that my children are capable of passing our standardized tests and soaring to new levels. Our country is so far behind other countries, especially in the area of mathematics. We as a country have to figure out something, and we have to decide that what we are doing isn't working and to differentiate our instruction. I want to provide my students with every opportunity I can to help them achieve great things.
