My state has recently updated our 6th grade math standards. While reviewing them, I noticed that I will now have to teach my students how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers. I had to teach these concepts when I taught 7th grade math. I know that it is easier for students to grasp and understand these concepts when they are allowed to work with manipulatives. Many students are kinesthetic learners which means that they learn better with hands-on activities. I will use the two-color counters to show students these skills and then allow them to use them as well. The protractors will be used to help students measure angles which is also a new standard for my 6th graders.
