I would like to increase and vary the type of mathematical tools available to my students during "math buddies". I use "math buddies" to give my students opportunity to work in pairs while completing activities to deepen their understanding of the South Carolina Math Standards and build community. I have two goals for my first graders. 1. To develop a group of lifelong learners and 2. To build a strong sense of community. I am using "math buddies" as a strategy to build a community of lifelong learners who enjoy math. Allowing students to work in pairs using hands on manipulative not only addresses the various learning styles within the class, and self confidence, but also encourages students to develop math skills and a sense of community because the students work together to achieve a common goal. The majority of my students are African Americans, who receive free or reduced school lunch. I am requesting manipulative which will support hands on investigation of math skills based on South Carolina Standards for teaching math to first graders. These math skill include: measurement(time, money, volume, length), algebra(reasoning), numbers (addition, subtraction, number sense, place value), geometry (shape identification,sides, corners), and fractions. I want to increase the hands on math opportunities available to my students during "math buddies". Allowing my students to work in pairs not only increases strategies for understanding but also builds community among my students.
