My Students

This year my students are thriving in an environment in which they are learning through a workshop model in math. The students rotate through stations, working on activities that help them to understand math concepts in a way that works for them. It is so amazing watching them learn and grow!

My students come from so many different backgrounds.

The variety of cultures make this an exciting environment to teach in. Many of my students speak several different languages and having hands-on activities really helps them to develop language and academic skills. In addition, our school has a high free or reduced price lunch percentage of over 85%. Even though there are these barriers to learning, my students come to school every day excited and ready to learn. Many students do not have the opportunity to practice math concepts through hands-on exploration. It is my desire to provide these opportunities to them in the classroom since research has shown that inquiry based learning benefits these students the most academically.

My Project

My students need hands on activities including Fraction Pizza Game, a money activity station, a math dice tub, and a Common Core learning center. My students will use the math materials every day during math workshop as they rotate in small groups through different learning activities. Students will get the opportunity to work in small groups, partners, and with the teacher to help build academic language, math skills, and cooperative learning skills. The students will explore a variety of math activities in an engaging manner that will help them to love to learn at the same time. As students progress through the learning standards from concrete to abstract, these math tools will help them deepen their understanding at a higher level. This will help them be successful on projects, in school and on mandatory state tests.

It brings tears to my eyes thinking of all of the ways that this project will change my students' lives.

Every day, my students surprise me with their motivation and curiosity about the world around them. This project will provide the building blocks of their future success in school by providing them with the basic skills needed in third grade to move up to the more difficult and challenging curriculum for fourth grade. I wish you could see their eyes sparkle with joy as they learn and explore daily.
