My students come from so many different backgrounds. The variety of cultures make this an exciting environment to teach in. Many of my students speak several different languages and having hands-on activities really helps them to develop language and academic skills. In addition, our school has a high free or reduced price lunch percentage of over 85%. Even though there are these barriers to learning, my students come to school every day excited and ready to learn. Many students do not have the opportunity to practice math concepts through hands-on exploration. It is my desire to provide these opportunities to them in the classroom since research has shown that inquiry based learning benefits these students the most academically.
