Marvelous Math Manipulatives for Stupendous Students!
My students need hands-on manipulatives for place value, fractions, decimals, and money, like the ones provided in the Hands-On Math Teaching Kits, to help them succeed in math.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Can I help?" is a phrase I often hear from my students. They are eager to come to the aide of a peer (or teacher!) in need. My students are compassionate. They take initiative. They are leaders.
My students are the future of our world.
Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." In order to cause change, we need students to be empowered with education.
There are forty-one students in 3rd grade, with over 85% low-income and 97% African American or African. In addition, approximately a third of the students are children of immigrants. We are a third-year Title I charter school, located in a high poverty area. Our supplies are limited and our families often cannot afford extra books and materials.
My Project
Our students have difficulty with number sense. Many do not have access to resources we may take for granted- board games, cards, dice, building blocks- the sorts of real-life practice that lay the foundation for representational and abstract math.
Hands-on materials are the first step toward student understanding.
We are requesting manipulative sets for multiple areas of math, including place value, fractions, decimals, and money. The manipulatives in this project will be used for small group instruction and extra practice for struggling students in intervention.
For my students with poor number sense, concrete practice from these manipulatives will be the bridge to success. Engaging repetition and hands-on work is just the thing for my students to thrive!
