Marvelous Math Goes to Middle School

My students need geometric shapes kits, a measurement center, fractions and decimals folder games, and other hands-on math learning materials to take home and explore with their families.

My Students

Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.

My English Language Learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.

Many of my students this year recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto, but they also experience significant adjustment challenges. These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles.

My Project

I was inspired by Mrs. Mianowski's prize-winning project "Marvelous Math Take Home Bags" to create something similar for my middle school students. Like Mrs. Mianowski's students, my students are English Language Learners who need lots of practice in a comfortable environment to learn both academic skills and the language required to show mastery of these skills.

I am requesting a variety of hands-on math materials which students will be able to check out to explore at home with their families.

Because my students are older, we will adopt a teach-a-parent model. Students will use the geometric shapes kits, the fractions and decimals folder games, the Angles Center, and the volume kit to demonstrate mastery at home. They will teach their parents the skills they are learning in class. This will be an effective review and an appealing kind of homework for my students who need tangible materials in their hands as they learn and study.
