My favorite quote is by Galileo: "You cannot teach people anything. You can only help them discover it within themselves." Helping students to discover math is sometimes a difficult task that requires small group discussion. We are requesting these items to help facilitate our small group center.
Our students are a wonderful group of sixth grade boys and girls who are hard working and curious.
Many of them struggle with math and have difficulty grasping the more complex concepts that are introduced to them in their first year of junior high school. This transitional year can be difficult for some of our students to adjust to. We hope to give them more individualized attention that they experienced in elementary school in our center to make this transitional year easier for them.
My Project
Our classroom is made up of two teachers and thirty-three students. There is a mix of general education students as well as students who have individual education plans for a range of reasons including dyslexia and ADHD. We are requesting materials to develop our small group instruction center. We want to create a space within our classroom where we can take a group of three to six students who are struggling with a lesson, and conduct discussions and investigate problems that will help develop and further their understanding. Currently we have our students sitting on the floor, leaning on their folders to work through the problems. We want to create a comfortable space with privacy partitions and a horseshoe-shaped table where they can focus and discuss their questions and misunderstandings.
These donations will help to improve the quality of our students' classroom experience.
Currently, some of our students are hesitant to ask for help or to join our small groups because it is uncomfortable and unpleasant to sit on the floor in the corner. Our new center will create an atmosphere where students can focus on the discussion and problem solving and not be distracted by their surroundings.
