Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-year teacher, teaching third grade in a Title I funded elementary school where students come from a low-income background, with 100% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school is located in an urban high-poverty neighborhood. We mostly have English Language Learners (ELL). We have a food pantry once a month so families can get access to food for their family, along with students taking home weekly "snack packs" on Fridays. Our students go home in the afternoon and do not have access to the Internet or fun activities around the community.
My goal as a teacher is to give my students the access and ability to use materials and manipulatives that they cannot get outside of school that will meet the needs of all the various learners in my classroom and will keep them engaged through all subject areas.
These students come to school ready to learn every day, and they would rather be at school than at home, which warms my heart!
My Project
My students have found a love for reading and looking through magazines. Scholastic News Magazines brings students engaging materials at grade level content while providing worldly news as well. Students are able to comprehend what's happening in our world because the news is written on their grade level.
By donating to our project, my students will increase their reading abilities and worldly knowledge by reading fun, engaging magazines for a variety of leveled learners.
With the variety of magazines coming in monthly, students' interests are peaked and they always have something new to look at and learn about! Even the most struggling readers find these materials to be engaging.
