My students live in a small, rural community in Appalachia with a low socioeconomic status.
Most of them have never had the chance to have their own pet and enjoy caring for an animal at home. None have ever had a classroom pet before. This year, was fortunate enough to be gifted 2 sweet, incredibly intelligent, marmoset babies. The students have named them Frankie and Scarlett. These kids absolutely adore them! When it comes to their monkeys and their well-being, even the biggest, toughest personalities soften.
Unfortunately, we don't have an ideal home for our pets. They are very active creatures that require a lot of room for their energy and enrichment toys for their ever growing brains. Currently, they are either in a small cage during class time when we need minimum distractions, back in my office so they don't run wild, or running wild while by students eat it up. They really need a large cage for times when they can't be held and played with. There really just isn't enough room for them, their energy and the containers and toys.
I see several benefits of having these finger monkeys in my classroom every single day. Not only are my kids learning how to care and be responsible for another creature, but they are also learning and becoming more interested in different animal behaviors and thinking.
We would all be grateful if you could help us obtain a new, safer, and more adequate home for our precious marmosets.
