Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Markers, paper, and sentence strips may sound like the beginning of a joke but our need is real for these resources. Vocabulary development depends upon dressing up our words and concepts with colors to help my students understand them.
Our Kindergarten students lack the resources that will set them up for academic success.
They come into school every day eager to learn something new. We are a Title I school with about 600 students. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who need additional materials to support learning new vocabulary and skills simultaneously.
Many people have said that our school is a hidden treasure and for that reason it can be difficult to locate. Because we are tucked into a small neighborhood, we do not receive much community support to fund classroom needs. Many of our teachers purchase materials independently or seek funding for materials.
My Project
My students need sentence strips, bookmarks, markers, and heavyweight paper to develop more knowledge of everyday vocabulary terms as well as learned concepts in science and social studies and specific words and phrases in language arts and math. With the paper, we will create student posters to show the students' understanding of motion, sink or float, the pledge as a promise, as well as abstract concepts like numbers. Kindergarten students love number posters created in class as a way to understand what a number looks like. For example, the number two drawn on a poster with student-drawn pictures of two hands, feet, eyes, thumbs, and more helps them to understand how numbers are symbols.
The sentence strips will be used to write a word and draw a representation for the word. This will help the students to learn to read the word with a conceptual meaning rather than learning the word on its own.
Your donation will support my students as they continue to learn to read, write, solve problems, and learn about the world around them.
Please take the time to help my students become their best.
