It's no secret that middle school students have a short attention span...they need to be engaged at all times in order to get the most out of their learning experience. The simple technology of the whiteboard can get an entire class involved in a lesson but only if we have enough markers!
My students absolutely love doing math (or anything else) on their whiteboards.
Everything becomes more exciting when whiteboards are involved. Students in my class who would never volunteer to answer a question with a raised hand are more than willing to throw up a whiteboard so I can point to their answer and yell "yes!"
My school serves at-risk students (we are just under 80% free and reduced lunch) who are often behind grade level. Anything we can do to get them engaged and accelerate their learning must be done. We already have the whiteboards (and the black baby socks we use as erasers)...we just need more markers so that we can use the boards on a very regular basis and make math class an exciting and enjoyable place.
The donation of whiteboard markers to my classroom will allow me to engage my students more often (all of them, not just select volunteers!) and I will be able to give students instant feedback on their work.
