"It's Friday! Friday! Friday! Don't wanna work; I want to play!" This is a favorite chant of my fifth graders who visit at least three classrooms each Friday singing and praising for their hard work that they have completed that week. The students' enthusiasm for celebrating their hard work permeates throughout the entire building.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch in our rural community, but participating in a variety of activities definitely keeps these fifth graders engaged and willing to learn.
We also have a local National Guard Unit and have a lot of military families with parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins serving our beautiful country. Our staff also has the opportunity to focus on the homeless students in our area by attending workshops and lectures to meet the needs of our students. We are dedicated to helping our students and their families in every way we can.
My Project
Our classroom loves to write, mark, and grade. We use pencils, pens, and dry erase markers on a daily basis.
Without these basic supplies our classroom would not function properly.
The dry erase markers are used mainly to show their work in math. The students love having a good working marker to show off their work. The red pens are used to proofread their writing and to help me, as a teacher, keep up on all the grading. 5th graders are responsible little human beings who love to help the teacher grade their work. They love to grade each other's papers. The discussion of why they marked something incorrect is priceless because they get to explain their thinking and reasoning. As a teacher, I love letting the kids take ownership of their work. Finally, a classroom cannot function without pencils and it seems there are never enough pencils for the school year. Our classroom would love to mark it, grade it, and write it!
