Marine Debris Musical: STEM, Theater & Planet Stewardship

My Project

“Marine Debris Musical” seeks to integrate STEM concepts with music, art, stewardship, and community action for our 4th-grade students. Our elementary school is located a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico and situated in the St. Andrew Bay Watershed. Our backyard and playgrounds are the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding waterways. Our location provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in learning experiences that connect with the local environmental issues affecting our bays and waterways. Living within miles of the Gulf of Mexico, many of our students witness first-hand the impact of marine debris and litter in our surrounding waterways. This project seeks to empower students to become changemakers through a student-created musical about marine debris. Students will integrate the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Science with the visual arts, theater arts, set design, and music to share actions people can take to reduce marine debris in local waterways.

The musical will infuse creativity and artistic expression with innovation in engineering, mathematics, and technology.

Students will design, measure, build, and paint their props for the musical. Students will create the theme, script, music, and choreography for each segment of the musical and participate in the production of the musical as light and prop technicians.

The cross-disciplinary approach will provide students the opportunity to share their learning in an alternative format while communicating with our school and community about actions people can take to reduce marine debris in coastal ecosystems. Throughout the process, students will develop creative and critical thinking skills while collaborating to create the musical.
