Marine Debris Art Tide Calendars

My Students

Littering and dumping at sea and land are resulting in an accumulation of marine debris in the Pacific Gyres which then washes up on Hawaii's beaches. Plastic persists in the environment long after being littered because it does not biodegrade. Art is a great way to educate about the environment.

KHS has a population of 872 students and 82 faculty members.

The four predominant ethnic groups are Part Hawaiian, Filipino, Caucasian, and Asian. The general socioeconomic status of the community drops below the indicators found throughout Hawai'i with the median household income being $32,334. In comparison with the rest of the state, our community has a lower percentage of the population both without a high school degree and without a college degree. Sixty-five percent of our student population receives free or reduced lunch.

My Project

My students need paper, bindings and ink to create tide calendars that educate, with student art, about plastics that threaten marine animals and ecosystems. Students will use these materials to create art that depicts the threats of plastics to marine life. Their messages will educate others via display of their art in a reusable marine tide calendar. Students not only have the opportunity to share their concerns but will be able to do so in an artistic means.

Marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is washing up on windward beaches throughout the Hawaiian Island chain.

This debris threatens marine life through entanglement, ingestion and habitat destruction. Students will be a great way to educate the public with the tide calendars that they create.
