Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach music at a kindergarten through eight grade public school in a large city, where music is celebrated and loved by all students. All 1,400 students at my school participate in the general music curriculum, and many participate in extra-curricular music programs as well. These extra-curricular programs center around instrumental music, and are well-known throughout our city. My students have performed at multiple parades, stores within our city, and for many government elected officials, as well as our community concerts.

My music students are leaders, creative thinkers, problem solvers, and teammates who are eager to showcase their musical abilities with the world.

Despite many struggles that my students have had to overcome, we have established a family within our classroom. Music brings us together, and inspires my students to share their talents and hard work with the world.

My Project

These instruments will allow my students to study and perform Mariachi music of the Hispanic culture - a culture in which the majority of my students belong. The guiatarron serves as the bass instrument in Mariachi music, and the vihuela is a tenor rhythm instrument. These instruments are very unique to Mariachi music, and are essential in establishing an authentic Mariachi experience. Students will study these instruments, along with other Mariachi instruments, and perform multiple times throughout the school year.

These instruments will play a variety of roles in my students' music education.

Students will study the history of the instruments, while learning more about the music history of their heritage. They will have opportunities to improvise and compose on the Mariachi instruments. And they will have opportunities to perform Mariachi music within our community.

My students have expressed a strong interest in learning more about music of their culture, specifically Mariachi. Many of my students are immigrants from Mexico, or have family members who are immigrants. Through learning about Mariachi music, they will not only expand their music education, but will develop ties to their family history and culture of their country that they otherwise would not be exposed to. Having authentic Mariachi instruments in my classroom would be a positive, fun, and culturally rich experience for all of my students.
