My Project
Did you know that music can help those with autism become more confident and social. And that's exactly what I aim to do for my students this school year.
Hi, my name is Ms. Wells, and I am the music/theatre/art teacher at a Title I and Title III specialized school in the South Bronx and most of my students have autism and all of them benefit from our music program.
I would like to help my students develop more confidence and become more social by providing them with 22 marching band uniforms. Last year, instruments were donated, and this year I would love it if my students can wear uniforms for our grand debut during one of our school-wide events.
Since the start of our marching band music program, I have noticed my music students become more motivated to participate in group activities. They are learning to adapt and become flexible as they work with their peers. They’re asking more questions, communicating their needs and listening to the needs of others. When I mentioned the idea of marching band uniforms, all of my students appeared to radiate with excitement. It’s as if they too are cognizant of the impact these uniforms will have on them.
It may seem silly at first thought, but I know these uniforms will help put my students in a different mindset and build their self-esteem as they begin to meet all of the expectations placed on them as individuals in the band, and as a team.
